Travel Notes: Virginia and Washington, DC

Last week, I was in Virginia and DC for an overnight trip that included a lunch event at Dogfish Head Alehouse in Fairfax, VA followed by a guided tour of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. This Dulles aerospace extension of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in DC is immense and displays historic air and space crafts such as the Enola Gay (Boeing B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan), the Space Shuttle Discovery, Air France Concorde, and Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.

After the aerospace tour, I had another event, this time at Clyde’s in Washington, DC. It felt like a whirlwind of a day but an overall fantastic day nevertheless.

At the Hotel Monaco where I stayed for the night was a copy of land + people magazine where I found the above quote by TS Eliot. It captured the theme of the day – traveling, exploring, and learning about modes of exploration (for the most part). Travel is an activity and experience that I enjoy and treasure immensely. It invigorates and inspires. The interesting thing is that I almost always feel anxious before I leave for a trip because I am as deeply and equally rooted as much as I love exploring. But once I am traveling, I immediately fall in the moment. I am “there” gratefully savoring it.
