We were out shopping this weekend for an outdoor planter to replace one that we bought from Terrain at Styers a few years ago. The planter will stay outdoors all year round and will have to be durable to withstand the cold and frost of winter and the heat of summer. I was hopeful to find an exact match to the planter that needed replacing but knew – with inventory tending to change each year to keep the selection fresh – that it would be unlikely.     Nevertheless, it’s always a treat to go to Terrain. There’s still a slight chill in the air but the days are definitely longer. The outdoors was calling so we went for a walk on Washington Avenue Green. It’s nice to be next to the water, tucked away from the zipping cars on Delaware Avenue, with views of the city and the ships. It’s definitely an urban scene with a promise of becoming a green oasis for walkers, joggers, and runners. Winter and Spring: The Philadelphia Flower Show

It was winter in Philadelphia and spring at the Flower Show. We met Simbala Drammeh, owner of Ti-a Baskets, and could not resist getting a couple of the colorful and functional handwoven baskets made by the indigenous women of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana. Her company pays its weavers 23% above Fair Trade requirements per basket. We certainly did not need more baskets but we were drawn to Simbala’s story as an entrepreneur and the work that she’s doing to teach skills and create jobs for women in Northern Ghana. Philadelphia is having its coldest weekend in twenty years but we decided to brave the chilly and blustery weather, walk several blocks with the wind blowing tiny icicles on our faces, for a hearty and delicious brunch at one of our favorite spots, Sabrina’s Cafe, in the Italian Market on 9th and Christian.
